Happy holidays, Kansas City! With all of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s easy to neglect your home. December is an important month in home maintenance, and we’ve got five tips on keeping your home in tip-top shape!
1. Replace Furnace Filter
Your furnace filter needs to be replaced every one-to-three months to keep the air in your home clean and flowing. You’ll want to go with a high-quality air filter to remove mold, pollen and other microscopic air particles. A dirty furnace filter can be dangerous, so if you haven’t had a chance to change yours this season, be sure to take care of it as soon as possible.
Weatherstripping doors and windows will prevent all of that cold air from getting in your home and keep warm air from escaping.
It’s best to have an expert come out and clean your chimney and check for any potential issues. Animals can build nests and grime, and creosote can be a big fire hazard. Before lighting the yule log, make sure it won’t burn down the house.
4. Drain Hot Water Heater
Drain your hot water heater once a year to remove debris and sediment. Your water heater will work more efficiently.
5. Prepare Sprinklers
To minimize the risk of freeze damage, you'll need to winterize your irrigation system.
6. Trim Trees
Before ice and snow weigh down branches, have them trimmed away from your home. You’ll want to call a pro for this one!
7. Protect Your Belongings
Outdoor furniture, plants, grills and pressure washers should not be stored outside in the winter. If you have a propane tank, you’ll need to have it disconnected from the tank first. You’ll also want to leave the tank stored outside.
